I was looking up scary art the other day and found that there are many styles out there. I am going to start adding to my collection of favorites. I found one in particular that was done in the 1400’s, and it is called “The Temptation of St. Anthony.” It is an amazing painting done in oil on panel, by Bernardo Perintino, or Parenzano, and depicts his version of hell. It is very detailed, and portrays St. Anthony lying on the ground in pain, caused by the demons of hell.
And when the enemy could not endure it. but was even fearful that in a short time Anthony would fill the desert with the discipline, coming one night with a multitude of demons, he so cut him with stripes that he lay on the ground speechless from the excessive pain. For he affirmed that the torture had been so excessive that no blows inflicted by man could ever have caused him such torment – St Athanasius.
